Jeremy Corbyn just 6/4 to stand down in 2017 – Clive Lewis odds cut

Published:

Embattled Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is being heavily backed to stand down this year, according to the latest odds.

Following a series of rumours that Corbyn is preparing to resign, a heavy run of bets have forced the bookies to cut the odds on him being replaced in 2017 to just 6/4.

And as a result, betting activity on the next party leader is ramping up, with potential Brexit rebel Clive Lewis the most popular candidate at 7/1, ahead of market leader Keir Starmer at 6/1.

Rebecca Long-Bailey’s odds also continue to shorten, as the one-time 66/1 shot comes into 12s.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Political punters aren’t confident Corbyn can last in the face of potential front bench resignations and potential defeat in the upcoming by-elections.

“Plenty are backing him to leave now under the assumption that the odds of him standing down could soon get a lot shorter.

He added: “In terms of a successor, Lewis is proving popular in anticipation of him rebelling against the Brexit vote.”

Both Copeland and Stoke-On-Trent Central host by-elections on February 23, and the two former Labour strongholds are under serious threat.

The Conservatives are odds-on to take Copeland, and with UKIP leader Paul Nuttall running in Stoke, there’s a very real chance Labour could suffer a double blow in a fortnight’s time.

Indeed it’s just 5/4 that Labour lose both seats.
