Cook steps down – Root 1/3 to skipper England to Ashes glory

Published:

Alistair Cook has called time on his record-breaking England Test captaincy, and successor-in-waiting Joe Root is odds-on to win an Ashes as skipper.

The bookies make the Yorkshire star just 1/3 to land the urn at any point as skipper, with Evens the price available he guides England to the top of the Test Rankings.

Meanwhile, it’s 6/4 he’s in charge for longer than Cook – 59 Tests – with the same price offered that Root break’s the Essex hitter’s centuries record for England.

And Cook is fancied to remain in the thick of the action, with 7/4 saying the former skipper is still in the Test side until 2019.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “When it comes to Cook’s replacement being Root all bets are off.

“Looking ahead to England under the new skipper, the betting suggests he’ll enjoy plenty of success including at least one Ashes series.”
