3 ways to back Leeds United for glory in crucial Yorkshire derby

Published:

Two of the Championship’s biggest clubs face off on Saturday lunchtime, as Sheffield Wednesday travel to face Leeds United. But there’s far more than just Yorkshire pride at stake, with both sides currently occupying play-off spots.

However, while they’re level on points in the table, we reckon all the value lies with 6/4 shots Leeds.

With an excellent home record, a striker in sensational form and a 2-0 win at Hillsborough in the last meeting, here’s how – and why – we’re backing Garry Monk’s men to triumph.

Wood you bet against Chris?

The New Zealand international has been arguably the finest striker in the Championship this season, and a run of eight goals in his last 10 games has done nothing to hurt his reputation. So the 6/4 for him to net at any time looks like excellent value.

However, it’s Wood’s trend of opening the scoring which has really caught the eye this season. The 25-year-old has netted first on 12 occasions so far this term, so backing him to repeat that feat against Wednesday looks like a very savvy bet.

Top Bet: Chris Wood to score first @ 4/1

There will be goals

Eight of the last 11 meetings between this pair have seen both teams find the net – while we’ve not seen the Whites and Owls play out a 0-0 draw since 1969.

Whilst we reckon Wednesday are unlikely to leave Elland Road with a point, it’s worth noting that they have scored in each of their last eight matches, while Leeds have found the net in 12 of their last 13 Championship fixtures.

With the likes of Wood and visitors’ loanee Jordan Rhodes involved, you’re more-or-less guaranteed goals. So a Leeds win and Both Teams to Score could represent the best value of all.

Back hosts for second-half show

While Leeds’ record on home soil has been excellent in 2017, they’ve generally had to wait until the second half to take the lead in games, both home and away – with the Whites’ pace and invention eventually wearing down well-organised sides.

Indeed, eight of their last 12 home wins have seen Monk’s men level at half-time, before a second-half offensive provided the points. And four of Wednesday’s last five losses saw them level at the break, before succumbing to defeat.

Top Bet: Half-Time/Full-Time: Draw/Leeds @ 9/2
