Why incoming Rangers keeper could be January’s best bargain

Jak Alnwick’s switch from Port Vale to Rangers looks to be a certainty, with the 23-year-old set for a medical at Ibrox later today. And with the reported fee around the £250,000 mark, there’s plenty of reason to believe he’ll prove a fantastic bargain for the Gers.

Despite Vale enduring a difficult campaign this season – currently lying 18th in League One – Alnwick has still chalked up a fairly impressive record between the sticks, chalking up 10 clean sheets in 31 games.

The Hexham-born stopper has proved himself to be a hugely agile shot stopper, with his spectacular triple-save at Gillingham for the Valiants one of the best bits of goalkeeping anywhere last season.

Alnwick has continued that knack for improbable stops this season, while also developing as an organiser and a commanding figure in the box. That was in evidence again when he kept out Oldham Athletic’s sizeable attacking threats earlier this month.

Whether or not the former Newcastle United man immediately takes number one spot from current first-choice stopper Wes Foderingham remains to be seen.

However, with the 26-year-old having been largely unchallenged for his position at Ibrox this season, the threat of competition could also do him good.

Next up for Rangers is a trip to Heart of Midlothian on Wednesday night, with 7/5 for the visitors to enjoy victory at Tynecastle.
