What can we expect from Tiger Woods’ first start of 2017?

All eyes will be on one man at this weekend’s Farmers Insurance Open, and of course that man is Tiger Woods, who makes his first PGA Tour appearance of 2017.

It’s only Woods’ second tournament since August 2015, following the Hero World Challenge last December.

But this weekend’s tournament at Torrey Pines is very much his first pukka competition in 18 months.

Woods showed glimpses of his old self last time out in Hawaii with a second round 65, but the bookies rate him a 33/1 shot here.

And for a man who has won the Farmers Insurance Open seven times in the past, that shows how far the great American has fallen.

Woods intends to play in four of the next five PGA events too, so clearly feels happy within his own mind and body about the challenge ahead.

In many ways this is the ideal tournament in which the 41-year-old can gauge where he is at.

In total, Woods has posted eight wins and four top-fives in 16 entries at Torrey Pines, so the course is unlikely to throw any surprises his way.

And with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Mastuyama and a whole host of golf’s biggest to compete against, this should be an excellent litmus test.

But equally of course, it gives Woods nowhere to hide if things don’t go to plan in San Diego this weekend.

Johnson and Day lead the betting at 9/1, ahead of the in-form Matsuyama at 14s.

But the attention isn’t on them in California, as come Sunday night we might finally know what to expect from Tiger Woods in 2017, and possibly beyond.
