Real Madrid just edging Man City in race for Dortmund ace Aubameyang

It’s taken a while, but Borussia Dortmund now look all but set to allow their star striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, to leave the club. But in doing so, they’re also sending a message out to potential suitors: he’s going to cost you.

A price tag of £70m has ruled out a whole host of clubs, including the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, who had previously been linked with a move for the Gabon international.

And that leaves both Real Madrid and Manchester City with the opportunity to flex their financial muscles in the summer, with the pair almost neck-and-neck at the head of the market for Aubameyang’s signature.

But as things stand, it’s the La Liga outfit who are the 4/1 favourites to sign the 27-year-old, with Man City just behind them in the market at 5s.

Much of that could be to do with Madrid’s transfer embargo which will be lifted in the summer.

Having not been able to make a statement in the market in recent windows, it’s likely the Galacticos will go all out at the first possible opportunity – and boss Zinedine Zidane has reportedly long been an admirer of the Dortmund man.

However, City manager Pep Guardiola will have had a full season with his squad by the time summer comes – and he’ll know exactly what he needs to take his side to the next level.

As things stand, he’s in desperate need of a world-class striker to ease the burden currently on Sergio Aguero’s shoulders.

But that’s a similar situation Zidane finds himself in at Madrid.

Despite boasting the likes of Karim Benzema and Alvaro Morata in his ranks, both players have been linked with moves away from the Bernabeu in recent years.

And you’d have to admit that Aubameyang would be a more feared striker than either of those two.

Couple that with the service of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale and it’s frightening to imagine just how far this Madrid side can go both domestically and in Europe.

Given that Dortmund have announced they’d be willing to listen to offers in the region of £70m for the striker, it’s clear both City and Madrid will be keeping tabs on any further developments.

With that in mind, this one could just come down to where the striker sees himself.
