Rangers make Arsenal prodigy their #1 January transfer target

It’s looking like a two-way battle for second spot in the Ladbrokes Premiership this season, with Rangers and Aberdeen jostling for supremacy. But the Gers could give their hopes a huge boost in the coming days, with the signing of Jon Toral.

The Gers are believed to be close to agreeing a deal, with the Express reporting that Mark Warburton has flown out to meet the talented midfielder, who is currently on loan at La Liga club Granada.

Having already procured the services of Gedion Zelalem on loan from the Gunners last season, the Ibrox boss has done dealings with the club before – a fact which could help him in getting this deal over the line.

A creative and tricky player with an eye for goal, 21-year-old Toral came to attention on loan at Brentford in 2014-15, where he played under none other than Warburton, netting six times to help the newly-promoted outfit to reach the Championship play-offs.

Having built on that with a hugely impressive campaign at Birmingham City last season, there’s little doubt he’d be an excellent addition to the Gers squad.

The Spaniard’s physicality and tenacious tackling also suggest he’d have few problems adapting to the hustle and bustle of the Ladbrokes Premiership.

With Niko Kranjcar ruled out for the rest of the season with injury, attacking midfield seems like the ideal area for Warburton to invest. Aside from 17-year-old Liam Burt, Josh Windass is currently the club’s only fit attacking midfielder.

Rangers are currently 4/7 in the Betting without Celtic, though if they can add a player of Toral’s skill and stature to their ranks, they could soon increase their two-point gap above the third-placed Dons.
