Queen’s Park defender is eyeing a return to the top

Former Motherwell defender Adam Cummins believes Queen’s Park is the perfect shop window for a move back to the Ladbrokes Premiership. 

The 23-year-old signed for Queen’s last summer, having spent a season in Wales with part-time side Bangor City, and has been a big part of the team which is currently competing for a play-off place in Ladbrokes League 1.

Queen’s Park has been a good breeding ground for up-and-coming players, with Andy Robertson and Blair Spittal among those to move up the divisions after leaving the Spiders.

And while Cummins has hopes of doing the same, he’s fully focused on taking Queen’s up too.

Having won promotion from League 2 via the play-offs last season, Cummins admits he and his team-mates are keen on repeating the feat 12 months on.

Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes News, he said: “We’re up there at the moment and it’d be brilliant to try and aim for the play-offs come the end of the season.

“I think we’re always trying to keep our feet on the floor, we come in twice a week, play on the Saturday and just work hard. We’ve got a good group of lads. We didn’t have a great start to the season, obviously over the last few months we’ve got it together and gone on a pretty decent run and managed to win some games.

“It’s still pretty tight, really – we’re a few points off second, but only a few points off sixth or seventh as well. In our league, everyone is beating each other, so we have to just concentrate on what we’re doing and there’s no such thing as an easy game. “We’re trying to concentrate on the points on the board, rather than our league position.”

Cummins was keen to praise experienced coach MacPherson, adding: “We’re doing well at the moment and a lot of our direction comes from the manager.

“He’s got us well drilled on what we’re doing and he’s someone who has been there and done it.

“He’s been in the game a long time and he was a big part of why I chose to come to Queens Park. The way he came across and everything he was saying, but everyone knows he’s an experience player in Scottish football.

“My career has panned out a little bit in the opposite direction to most people. I started playing for Motherwell at 19, was playing every week, and then from there I’ve had a few injuries and fell out of it a little bit.

“I’ve had a few moves and tried to rediscover playing, but I’m only 24 in March. What the gaffer is always saying to us is, ‘this is a platform for us to showcase what we can do’.

“We have all the facilities and we’re playing at Hampden every second week. It’s up to you as an individual to put in the hard work behind the scenes too.

“Having played in the Premiership previously, it’s somewhere I’d like to get back to, but the important thing at the moment is that I’m playing and getting in the team. “Let’s hope the good run here continues and we’ll see where we are at the end of the season.”

Cummins and his Queen’s Park team-mates travel to Peterhead this weekend, and are priced at 14/5 to collect all three points.
