Murray safely through to Round Three – but amazingly so is Evans

There was plenty of joy for British tennis fans on Day Three in Melbourne, as Andy Murray swept into the Third Round. But the big story was that Dan Evans is there too, having defeated former US Open champion Marin Cilic.

The 26-year-old produced arguably the biggest win of his career, to defeat the number seven seed 3-6 7-5 6-3 6-3.

Even more impressively, Cilic had taken the opener and you could have got 16/1 on the Brit to turn it around.

But that he did, and Evans will now face Aussie hope Bernard Tomic.

And after his heroics against Cilic, the Birmingham-born player should have every reason to land a Fourth Round spot for the first time in his career.

As Evans caused the shock of the tournament so far, Murray got underway against Russian teenager Andrey Rublev.

For all the youngster’s hope, Murray was simply too good, prevailing 6-3 6-0 6-2.

The only concern for the world number one was an awkward fall in the final set.

Murray was clearly in discomfort with his ankle, but after the match said it was ‘not too serious’.

But after dispensing with Rublev, and before that Illya Marchenko, things crank up a notch next time for the two-time Wimbledon champion.

Sam Querrey awaits in Round Three, and the American has been around long enough for Murray to be concerned.

Indeed the 29-year-old has beaten the Olympic gold medallist before, albeit back in 2010.

But it’s so far so good for Murray, providing that ankle concern doesn’t become anything more than that.
