Man United odds-on to snap up new Cristiano Ronaldo from Benfica

Jose Mourinho’s revamp of the Manchester United squad is on the verge of getting its most important piece yet, with the Red Devils seemingly certain to sign Benfica’s Goncalo Guedes – a player dubbed the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’.

The versatile 20-year-old – as comfortable on either wing as he is as in the striker role – has been in scintillating form this season. He’s already netted seven goals and assisted as many, including a fantastic individual effort against Besiktas in the Champions League.

Those displays have drawn admiring glances from a number of European football’s top clubs, but it’s Manchester United who look sure to secure his signature. And Guedes’ omission from the Benfica squad in Sunday’s game against Tondela has led many to think he’s as good as gone.

The bookies concur with that, pricing the 20-time English champions at 1/3 to make the move before this window closes.

As far as United are concerned, the Portugal international looks to be the ideal signing.

With Wayne Rooney hotly tipped to exit, and winger Memphis Depay having exited for Lyon after a hugely underwhelming stint in the North-West, a versatile and hugely talented addition to their attacking ranks could well make the difference as United look to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to Hull City in the EFL Cup as Mourinho’s men look to build on their 2-0 lead from the first leg, with 1/2 for United to win on the night.

However, the overarching aim of this season remains the Premier League, and in particular, securing a top four berth – currently priced at 5/4.
