Man United lead the way in race for Silva after transfer kitty boost

They may have spent in excess of £150m on transfers back in the summer, but Manchester United could be about to take their total spend for the season to over £220m with the acquisition of Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva.
In fact, the Red Devils have emerged as 2/1 frontrunners for the 22-year-old, despite Spanish giants Real Madrid reportedly keen.
If interest from the Spanish capital is to be believed, United will have to act quickly if they’re to secure Silva’s signature, as Los Blancos’ transfer embargo will be lifted next summer.
Having been unable to spend big for the past few transfer windows, it’s likely Madrid will want to make a statement at the end of the season, and 8/1 says they agree a deal this month.
It’s therefore no surprise to see the 13-time Premier League champions priced so short to add the Portugal international to their ranks.
United’s kitty has been boosted by the sales of Morgan Schneiderlin for £21m to Everton and Memphis Depay, who’s expected to join Lyon for a similar amount in the coming days.
That means if it’s £70m Monaco are demanding for the man with seven goals and six assists already to his name this season, the Red Devils would only need to find an extra £28m.
And, having done business with the French outfit as recently as last season, when Anthony Martial made the move to Old Trafford, it’s likely the two teams would be able to negotiate a deal relatively quickly.
The former Benfica youth product has played a key role for his current club this season, featuring in all but one of their Ligue 1 fixtures so far. And Monaco find themselves at the top of the table having scored a staggering 60 goals in 20 games.
That’s the reason the club are demanding such a huge figure for the youngster, and there are only a handful of clubs who can afford him.
One of those is just across the city of Manchester, and our traders have made it a 5/1 shot that Silva joins Pep Guardiola’s revolution.
But we’re not ruling out a switch to Monaco’s Ligue 1 rivals PSG, with 6/1 on offer for the midfielder to be plying his trade at the Parc des Princes next month.
