Crystal Palace ace banking on Newcastle leapfrogging his current club

Published:

He was the subject of a £13m transfer from Newcastle United to Crystal Palace last summer. But speculation surrounding Andros Townsend’s return to Tyneside is intensifying, and our traders have jumped on the bandwagon and priced up odds for a move going ahead this month.

At 5/4, we reckon there’s every chance the 25-year-old could be playing in a Newcastle shirt by February 1. And should that happen, it could have a massive impact on proceedings at the top of the Championship table.

Townsend’s arrival would make the Magpies even more of a dangerous force going forward, despite having already bagged 54 goals this season.

Andros is planning ahead

New Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce is reportedly not a fan of the England international, and will look to sell him and reinvest the money elsewhere in his squad – with strengthening his defensive unit seemingly being Big Sam’s priority.

But even with that in mind, why is Townsend looking to move down a division?

We can only assume the former Tottenham Hotspur winger is expecting the Magpies to not only return to the top-flight, but leapfrog his current club, Palace, in the process.

And for such an attack-minded player, it has to be said that the prospect of teaming up with Rafa Benitez once again would be much more appealing to Townsend than playing for Allardyce at Selhurst Park.

The midfielder was just one shining light in an otherwise dark and forgettable campaign for the north-east outfit last year.

Despite signing for them in January, Townsend registered four goals and two assists in 12 games, creating 26 chances in that time. And you’d imagine the Magpies would have been much more of a solid outfit had they signed him at the start of the season.

The reason they had to let him go back in the summer was because demand from Premier League outfit’s for Townsend was so high following Newcastle’s relegation.

But it seems as though things haven’t gone as expected in the capital, and at the moment it’s Newcastle who are leading the way for the Englishman’s signature once again.

So what do fans think? Would you welcome Townsend back to St James’ Park? And would Crystal Palace be crazy to let him go?
