BDO World Darts Championships: Who’s stood out so far at Lakeside?

It’s been a fine opening few days at Lakeside this year, with the ever-improving players on the BDO circuit continuing to raise the bar.

But who has impressed us so far on the most famous stage in the sport?

Ladbrokes News takes a look at the standout names we’ve seen this week. And we’re kicking things off with our player of the week so far…

Casey Gallagher

Without question, 20-year-old Gallagher pulled off the performance of the tournament so far. In fact, you’d struggle to find a bigger upset on the Lakeside stage over the last few years.

A set down against the world number one, the youngster from Crayford defied all the odds and turned the game on its head.

After pulling it back to 1-1 in set, she went on to break Deta Hedman’s throw twice in the deciding set, before controlling her nerves to finish on a tricky 14.

Forget one to watch for the future – she’ll be well fancied to go the distance this year.

In fact, having entered the competition as a rank outsider at 80/1, she’s already seen her odds slashed into just 10/1. We know where our money’s going.

Danny Noppert

He may have had to wait four days before making his debut at Lakeside, but Noppie didn’t disappoint when he finally stepped up to the oche.

Hitting 180s at a rate which plenty of PDC players would have been happy with, the 26-year-old Dutchman had to play near to his best to shrug off Canadian David Cameron.

Eventually coming out victorious with a 3-1 win under his belt, the 9/2 second-favourite recorded the highest average we’ve seen so far this year (98.06).

He’ll potentially have to beat the likes of Scott Waites, Scott Mitchell and Glen Durrant if he’s to lift the trophy. But play like he did in the first round, and there’s every chance of him doing exactly that.

Martin Adams

Wolfie may have suffered a first round exit on this stage last year, but he means business this time out.

In a game which he looked to have under control, he suddenly found himself in a real dogfight. But that’s just how Adams likes it. And as he’s done so many times over the last few years, he came out on top in a final set thriller.

The three-time world champ was far from his best, but that’s frightening for potential opponents.

Up next for the world number five is a clash with Jeff Smith, who whitewashed him at Lakeside last year. Wolfie will be after one thing and one thing only – revenge.
