We’ve barely recovered from the excitement of Thistlecrack’s King George VI Chase victory but there’s no time to waste with more top racing to get stuck into.
I know what you’re thinking. This writer was so adamant about Cue Card yet is now mooning over the new kid on the block.
Well, that was yesterday’s tipping and you have to take your hat off to a performer of such awesome brilliance.
Now that we’re done with the emotional side of things, let’s take a proper look at the cards.
The Welsh National is the undoubted highlight on the final ever Channel 4 Racing card.
And with a total of seven races set to be broadcast from Chepstow and Kempton the broadcaster is certainly going out with a bang.
Here are our best bets…
Venetia Williams’ Aso has been performing very respectably this season with his recent second in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup a further sign of progression.
The talented six-year-old was our tip on that occasion and we’re sticking with him on home turf.
Williams has won three of the last four renewals and her latest hope has a fantastic chance of adding to that stellar record when he steps down in class.
Only four are set to go to post for this Desert Orchid Chase with Special Tiara currently edging favouritism over his battle-hardened rivals.
Henry de Bromhead’s charge could only finish third in the Shloer Chase last time out and has had to be content with playing a number of supporting roles lately.
Instead, our preference is for old sparring partner Sire De Grugy with his Ascot victory and subsequent runner-up placing in the Tingle Creek showcasing the talent that still remains.
There’s only been one Welsh National winner aged nine years old or older in the past 20 years with horses between six and eight dominating the previous 10 renewals.
And that age bracket is where we’ve focussed our attention on, as well as horses lower down the weights.
Six of the last 10 winners, including the last five, were officially rated 137 or lower.
All of which leads us to the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Beg to Differ.
He’s already appeared amongst some of these rivals before this season with his tenth-placed finish in a trial at his track coming on good ground.
However, with a bit more cut in the surface we’re feeling confident our longshot will put in an even bolder showing.
