Any football fan will tell you it’s a good day if their team wins. But when your local team’s victory ensures the success of your 12-fold accumulator to deliver a whopping return of £20,980.72 from a £5 bet, it’s fair to say that it’s a perfect day.
So, how did this punter’s incredible day of betting unfold, as their 4195/1 Acca came good?
Things started promisingly, with two leads established in the 10th minute, as Carlisle United dealt an early blow to Yeovil Town, while Livingston took the lead in their Ladbrokes League One clash with Airdrieonians.
They were quickly joined by Southend United, as Nile Ranger scored his third goal in two games, with Scunthorpe United, Celtic and Newcastle United.
All six of those sides went on to secure victory without a real scare. Now onto the drama…
Despite having led early on, Rochdale had gone 2-1 down just before the hour mark. Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers had levelled for the second time against Reading, and Plymouth Argyle couldn’t seem to score at Accrington Stanley.
But with Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage – this bettor’s local team – taking the lead in the second half, there was hope.

And this audacious Acca got another boost when Plymouth’s Craig Tanner saw his shot trickle through the keeper’s fingers to put the Pilgrims 1-0 up. Only the Royals were letting our customer down, having twice surrendered a lead at Ewood Park.
But as the clock ticked past the 91-minute mark, Reading winger Garath McCleary burst down the flank, squaring the ball neatly for George Evans, who scored just his second goal of the season – to send our punter into dreamland.
We can’t reveal too much about what that £20,980 will be going on, but a few bottles of Champagne and a tattoo of Reading’s last-gasp goalscorer could well be on the agenda.
