Southampton defender now odds-on for Man United switch

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho looks set to finally snap up compatriot Jose Fonte, with the Portuguese ace odds-on to leave Southampton for Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old has been an integral part of the Saints rise from Football League also-rans to Premier League heavyweights, inspiring them to back-to-back promotions from League One since following his 2010 arrival. However, it’s in the top-tier where he’s really shone.

That’s backed up by the 50 clean sheets he’s notched up in 150 Premier League appearances for the Saints, while the captain has also made some vital contributions at the other end, with all of his seven goals in the top-tier genuine game changers.

Now possessing trophy-winning experience on the back of Portugal’s triumphant Euro 2016 campaign, it’s no surprise Fonte is highly sought-after, with Man United now just 10/11 to snap up the experienced defender.

Everton are next up at 10/3, with Arsenal emerging as surprise challengers at 11/2 to end his six-year stay on the south coast.

A return Crystal Palace is 8/1, while Liverpool are the same price to be his next permanent club.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Mourinho is on course to make a Fonte-astic signing, with United galloping ahead in the race to sign the Portuguese powerhouse.”

Next up for the Red Devils is a Europa League tie at Zorya, with 7/20 for the three-time Champions League winners to enjoy victory in Ukraine.
