PSG set to steal Arsenal and Chelsea’s Wolfsburg target

Paris Saint-Germain are preparing to swoop in and snap up left-back Ricardo Rodriguez from Wolfsburg, a player heavily linked with both Arsenal and Chelsea.

The 24-year-old is continuing to impress with the Bundesliga outfit, in spite of the club’s struggles this season.

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move in the summer to create competition for Nacho Monreal, and despite Kieran Gibbs’ return to first-team action, the Gunners may still yet consider a deal.

And when Antonio Conte took charge of Chelsea, Rodriguez was just one of a number of players targeted as potential options for the Italian.

With Gary Cahill flattering to deceive, and despite David Luiz’s solid performances, it’s widely expected Conte will still be chasing at least two defenders in the coming transfer windows.

After starting out with FC Zurich, a then 19-year-old Rodriguez moved to Wolfsburg in 2011 for a princely £7.5m and really came to prominence in the 2013-14 season, scoring five goals and supplying nine assists as Die Wolfe finished fifth in the Bundesliga.

And a year later the left-back netted another five and set-up six as the Lower-Saxony outfit finished second.

Rodriguez featured in every minute of Switzerland’s Euro 2016 campaign, and has started 12 of Wolfsburg’s 13 league games this term, missing just 72 minutes of football.

And according to reports on the continent, PSG are ready to launch a bid and take advantage of Rodriguez’s £21m release clause.

It could prove to be a hammer blow for Arsenal and Chelsea, although Wenger now seems content with his Monreal/Gibbs set-up once again, and the Blues are sweeping all aside in the Premier League.

But don’t be surprised if PSG’s movements spark the Premier League duo into action next month.
