Man United star tipped to make stunning return to Watford

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri could be set to pull off the biggest transfer coup of the coming window, with the Hornets boss reportedly closing in on the signing of Ashley Young from Manchester United.

The 31-year-old has proved an important squad player for the Red Devils since arriving in 2011 – lifting a Premier League title along the way. But having made just three starts in the top-flight under Jose Mourinho this season, he could be set for a January exit.

And it’s Watford who are in pole position for Young’s signature, with the bookies offering 5/4 for the former Vicarage Road youth product to head home.

During his four seasons in the Hornets first team, the tricky winger became a bona fide fans’ favourite, scoring 22 times in 110 games, including a vital goal in the 2006 Championship play-offs, to help the Hertfordshire club win promotion back to the top-tier.

However, while the lure of a return home could be too tempting to turn down, Watford will face stiff competition from a host of Prem clubs for Young’s signature.

Everton are 3/1 to lure the England international to Merseyside, while 6/1 says he reunites with former Old Trafford teammates Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans at West Brom.

Wherever he does go, it seems likely Young will exit Man United sooner rather than later, with 10/11 for him to depart the club in January, while 1/2 says he leaves in the Summer.

For now though, the Hornets will have to end their run of back-to-back losses without the experienced winger.

Watford face Everton at Vicarage Road on Saturday, with 19/10 for the hosts to come out on top.
