League Two: Leyton Orient one of the season’s big market movers

With Christmas rapidly on the way, it’s a good time to take stock and see what the situation is four months in to the 2016-17 season. And few leagues can match the unpredictability and surprise nature of League Two.

Doncaster, Carlisle and Plymouth may have a sizeable gap on the rest at the top, but behind them the old fourth division is a congested affair.

Just fourteen points split fourth to bottom, and with 27 games still to go, each side must still harbour hopes of promotion and fears of relegation.

This is no clearer than the current favourites for the drop – Morecambe at 9/5 – who were top of the table entering September.

The Shrimps were as big as 7/1 to go down earlier this season, but that’s little in comparison to Notts County.

The world’s oldest professional football club are 4/1 for the drop, having been 25s in a month ago.

But the biggest swinger in the relegation market is Leyton Orient. The O’s were seemingly nailed one for a good season, but with nine defeats at home already, they’re relegation odds have plummeted from 66s into 5/1.

And there’s plenty of movement in the league winner market too.

Doncaster are the current favourites at 15/8, but pre-season the Yorkshire outfit could have been backed at 8s to come top of the pile this season.

Behind them are Carlisle at 11/4, with the Cumbrians 16/1 pre-season and it’s the same story in Devon where Plymouth have gone from 20/1 on August to 7/2 today.

It’s a sign of League Two’s competitiveness that the Pilgrims were larger than Cheltenham in July, but the Gloucestershire side sit second bottom today, with 400/1 saying the Robins somehow win the league this season.

There’s a twist and turn at every ground in League 2 this season, and things don’t look like settling down anytime soon in English football’s most competitive division.
