League One: Scunthorpe and Coventry among the big movers

Published:

Earlier this week we profiled the changing odds and fortunes in League Two, and now it’s the turn of League One. The third tier is equally as congested as the fourth, but there’s still been plenty of movement since August.

With 15 of the 24 sides competing this season based in Northampton and upwards, there’s certainly a strong northern vibe about the old third division.

And the north is certainly dominating proceedings too, with the top five comprising of Scunthorpe, Bolton, Sheffield United, Bradford and Rochdale.

The Dale lie fifth, but the balance of play in League One is showcased by the fact that they sit three points nearer to relegation than top.

Favourites today at 15/8, league leaders Scunthorpe could be backed pre-season at 16s, behind a number of sides who have since flopped.

Sitting in second, Bolton are another you’d have wished you got on back in the summer, with the Wanderers now 3/1 having been installed originally as 14/1 shots.

Some of the pre-season favourites included MK Dons and Coventry, who have both seen their odds balloon substantially.

The Milton Keynes outfit have floundered from 9/1 to a sizeable 300/1 today, while the Sky Blues have gone from 12/1 to a whopping 750/1.

Indeed, such has been the surprise struggles of Coventry, their relegation odds have come in from 7/1 in pre-season to just 2s today.

Chesterfield are another who have seen their price for the drop head into worrying odds-on territory, with the Spireites moving from 11/4 to 1/2.

Shrewsbury are seemingly doomed now according to the bookies, although it never looked too good for the Salop originally with 13/5 for the drop becoming 1/4 today.

On the flip side, AFC Wimbledon have gone from 7/2 in the relegation betting to a comfortable 16/1, and similarly Fleetwood have grown from 7/2 to 14/1 as Christmas approaches.
