Everton speed up Depay chase as Koeman confirms Bolasie operation

Everton look set to make a sustained bid to sign Manchester United’s Memphis Depay, after boss Ronald Koeman confirmed Yannick Bolasie will undergo surgery next week.

The £25m summer signing sustained knee ligament damage against United last weekend, and is set to miss the rest of the season.

It’s a huge blow to the Toffees, who have already seen their season fall flat after a promising start under Koeman.

The club have been linked with a move for Depay for months, but now the deal seems even more likely.

The winger has barely featured under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford this term, being named in just five match day squads from 14 Premier League games.

Totalling just 20 minutes of league football this season, Depay’s future looks bleak at the Theatre of Dreams, less than 18 months after arriving amid plenty of hype from PSV.

The deal makes plenty of sense for club and player, with Everton perhaps the ideal place for the 22-year-old  to reignite his career under compatriot Koeman.

A loan until the end of the season looks to be the most likely outcome, with an option for Everton to make the deal permanent in the summer.

With continued reports that Romelu Lukaku may leave the club at the end of the season, Koeman needs to do all he can to ensure his star striker stays.

If they sign Depay and rediscover the forward’s potential, then that could go a long way to helping Lukaku stay.

The Toffees will be hoping to kick-start their campaign on Saturday lunch-time, when they face Watford as 6/4 favourites.
