Poll Reaction: Rooney to be England hero in Scotland clash

Published:

International football’s oldest and arguably fiercest rivalry resumes tomorrow night at Wembley, as England face off against Scotland for the 113th time. And Twitter is backing Wayne Rooney to make the difference for the hosts.

Today’s @Ladbrokes poll asked who would net first for the Three Lions in this crucial World Cup Qualifier, and 36 per cent of you plumped for the Manchester United striker to open  the scoring.

Having netted twice in the 3-1 victory at Hampden Park the last time these two met, the 30-year-old seems a good bet to break the deadlock at Wembley at 9/2.

Daniel Sturridge is shortly behind in the vote, with 32 per cent of you expecting England’s first goal to be celebrated with that iconic arm-wiggling.

In third and fourth spot came the Premier League’s top two goalscorers for 2015-16 – Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

The Spurs star was tipped to be the first name on the scoresheet for Gareth Southgate’s side by 19 per cent of you, while 13 per cent of you backed the man who netted against another of the Home Nations – Wales – at Euro 2016.

In the match betting, the hosts are 2/5 favourites for victory, while 12/1 says we see a repeat of the 3-1 margin England won by during the last meeting.
