Newcastle priced to smash Reading’s record points tally

They were the bookies’ favourites to top the Championship table for the second time in their history before a ball was kicked in the summer. And Newcastle United have failed to let punters down up to this point, as Rafa Benitez’s men now sit three points clear at the top of the table – a position which they don’t look like giving up any time soon.
But forget the 2/5 we’re offering for the Magpies to win the league title for the second time in eight seasons, we’re more interested in the 9/1 for Benitez’s men to smash the total points tally for the division, a record Steve Coppell’s Reading side set back in the 2005-06 campaign.
That year, the Royals picked up a staggering 106 points, 16 more than their nearest challengers Sheffield United.
And as things stand, Newcastle are on course to reach similar heights, after missing out on that record by just four points back in 2010.
Despite a shaky start to life in the Championship this summer, the North East outfit are currently enjoying a seven game winning run in all competitions, losing just one of their last 16 matches.
So let’s take a quick look at how Newcastle compare to that famous Reading side after the same amount of games…
Coincidentally, Coppell’s men had achieved exactly the same amount of points (34) after 15 games, but it’s the Magpies who boast more wins, with 11 to Reading’s 10.
And it’s also the Championship’s current league leader’s that have been more clinical in front of goal, finding the net 32 times, while the Royals managed just 25 goals from their opening 15 matches.
However, if the Magpies are to set a new record for points won, they’ll do so having already lost more games than Reading did in their entire campaign 10 years ago. Coppell’s Reading outfit were certainly difficult to break down, losing just two games out of 46 – a record which hasn’t been matched by any side since.
Game 16 for Reading that season was against Leeds United, in a fixture which ended 1-1.
That means if Newcastle can take all three points from a struggling Cardiff City side this weekend, they’ll be well on course to reach the unheard-of 107-point mark.
