Newcastle and Benitez preparing to cherry-pick Callum Wilson

Newcastle United are looking into the possibility of signing Callum Wilson from Bournemouth should they secure promotion back to the Premier League this season.

That’s the situation according to multiple media outlets today, who claim the Magpies see Wilson as the ideal player to help spearhead their Premier League return.

The Geordie outfit already have previous in dealing with the Dean Court outfit, persuading Matt Ritchie to drop down a division in the summer for £10m.

Wilson has netted three times for the Cherries this season, but has already proved his Premier League credentials with five goals in the opening six games of last season for the top-tier debutants.

And 20 goals in Bournemouth’s successful Championship-winning campaign of 2014-15 adds further weight to Wilson’s talents.

Valued at just over £7m by transfermarkt.co.uk, Wilson is under lock and key at Dean Court until 2020, but as seen with Ritchie, the Toon aren’t afraid to splash out.

Boss Rafa Benitez appears to be reaping the rewards of his decision to stick with the Toon following relegation last season.

Newcastle currently top the Championship by a handy five points, and are currently on an eight-game winning streak.

Ritchie wasn’t the only man to drop down a tier to join the Magpies, with Dwight Gayle revelling in the north-east after moving from Crystal Palace.

And plenty of Newcastle fans would be keen to see a Wilson-Gayle strikeforce in the Premier League next season.

Coventry fans will also be interested in seeing if this move goes ahead, with the League One outfit set to pocket a sell-on fee if Bournemouth sell Wilson.

The Sky Blues sold Wilson to the Cherries for £3m in 2014, but included a sell-on clause believed to be around 15%, which could be worth £150k should Newcastle launch a £10m bid.
