Dortmund defender could resume Middlesbrough talks in January

As we approach the mid-point of the Premier League, Middlesbrough’s return to the top tier has been steady and efficient. And boss Aitor Karanka will feel much more secure about his side’s chances if they can land Dortmund defender Neven Subotic.

Boro were hoping to land the 27-year-old for £10m in the summer, but Subotic failed  his medical and underwent a rib operation.

But the Serbian made his return to action this week, featuring for BvB’s U23 side, and has hinted in the German press that a move to Teesside could now be on the cards.

Middlesbrough could use a signing or two in January, if only to ensure they don’t end up in a relegation fight.

Karanka’s men are yet drop into the bottom three this term, but with just four points separating 12th to 18th, it’s set to prove mightily close to avoid the drop.

Boro have conceded a very respectable 15 times this season, so it may seem odd for the club to be chasing another defender.

But neither Ben Gibson and Calum Chambers can boast Subotic’s experience, while the latter could be recalled by Arsenal later in the season.

Plus, the signing of Subotic may allow Karanka the tactical cover and depth to play more expansive football offensively.

The Teessiders will be hoping to pick up a third win of the campaign when they host Hull next Monday.

The bookies make Boro 3/4 favourites at the Riverside as they look to continue their journey into mid-table safety.
