Chelsea battling with Man City and Arsenal in race for Napoli ace

Chelsea are believed to be in pole position to sign Algerian defender Faouzi Ghoulam from Napoli, but face stiff competition from fellow Premier League heavyweights Manchester City and Arsenal.

The 25-year-old helped Gli Azzurri record 17 clean sheets in his 38 outings last season, as Maurizio Sarri’s men finished second in Serie A and reached the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Solid at the back, he’s also one of the Campania club’s biggest creative assets, providing nine assists since the beginning of last season.

Having also begun to add goalscoring to his repertoire – with two in his last four outings for national side Algeria, his stock has never been higher. So it’s no wonder that a trio of English giants are in the race for his signature.

While Chelsea currently boast the Premier League’s equal best defensive record, Antonio Conte seems keen to continue revitalising the Stamford Bridge backline.

It would certainly be no surprise to see the Italian boost his options by snapping up left-back Ghoulam sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, the Citizens and Gunners haven’t kept a clean sheet in 11 games combined, meaning both Pep Guardiola and Arsene Wenger should look to make defensive reinforcements a priority in January.

Next up for Chelsea is a trip to Manchester City, with the west London outfit 12/5 for a first win at the Etihad in four visits.
