California dreaming, Wayne Rooney linked with move to spearhead LA FC

Wayne Rooney could find himself playing for MLS newboys Los Angeles FC by 2019.
Set to enter MLS in two years’ time, franchise owner Tom Penn has set tongues wagging after confirming that the Manchester United captain is a target for the California outfit.
Rooney is contracted at Old Trafford until 2019, and reportedly turned down a move to the Chinese Super League in the summer in order to remain at the Theatre of Dreams.
Speaking to ESPN FC, Penn said: “Wayne Rooney is an example of the calibre of player we are looking to bring to LA FC.”
The striker wouldn’t be the first to see out his autumn years in America, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard just two fellow Premier League legends to go Stateside in recent times.
The former Chelsea midfielder particularly impressed, producing a number of goals and assists for New York City FC at the tender age of 38.
So in theory, Rooney should still be able to produce the goods for LA FC at 34 and beyond.
The club are set to open a brand new 22,000-seater stadium in 2018, and would provide a rival for the established club in the region, LA Galaxy.
Having already seen the impact of fellow England and United legend David Beckham in LA, it’s little wonder Rooney is high up on the MLS rookies’ wish-list.
The bookies have made the LA newboys 7/4 to be Rooney’s next permanent club, ahead of the Galaxy at 9/4.
In the meantime, Rooney will be hoping to shake off a knee injury in time for Man United’s clash with Arsenal on Saturday.
The Red Devils are 6/4 for victory at Old Trafford.
