Aston Villa on course to add Man United stopper to their ranks

Aston Villa have emerged as favourites to bring in Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone, with a loan deal between the clubs believed to be on the cards.

The 23-year-old stopper certainly knows the Championship well, having impressed during loan spells at Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End at this level.

In fact, his record throughout the Football League is an excellent one, having helped PNE win promotion from League One back in 2014-15, with 13 clean sheets in his 15 appearances.

An imposing yet agile keeper, the Preston native would surely offer a reliable alternative to current number one Pierluigi Gollini, who has impressed since his summer arrival at Villa Park, but lacks the physical strength of Johnstone.

However, despite the attributes the latter has, there seems little chance of anything approaching game time at Old Trafford, meaning he’s likely to be tempted by the offer of minutes in the Midlands.

Johnstone still hasn’t played a minute of football for Jose Mourinho’s men, and with his career so far consisting of a string of loan deals, he could likely be convinced to stay at Villa Park in the long-term – if that offer is on the table.

Next up for Steve Bruce’s men is a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday night, with 7/2 for the Villans to chalk up a fourth win in five games.
