Andy Murray won’t forget 2016 in a hurry. It was a year which saw the Scot claim another Wimbledon title, another Olympic gold medal, a career best eight ATP titles, and of course, finally become world number one. So what will 2017 bring?
The Scot produced a sensational season to sweep all aside, racking up a 62-3 record starting from the Rome Open in May to the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Novak Djokovic was usurped at the top of the rankings after the Paris Masters, as Murray became the first Brit to top the standings in the computerised era.
Fittingly, the 29-year-old defeated his great rival in the London showpiece at the weekend, to ensure the year-end number one spot was his.
Murray now heads into the off-season on a 25-match winning streak, so we’ve spoken to our traders who have come up with some 2017 specials.
The Scot is Evens to be world number one at the end of the 2017 season, with 2/1 on offer that he sits at the top of the pile for next year’s duration.
It’s 303/1 meanwhile that Murray can beat Roger Federer’s 302-week record as world number one.
And given his current dominance, we can expect plenty to fancy the 50/1 on offer for Murray to next year become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four Grand Slams in one season.
Exactly three Slams can be backed at 8/1, with 5/2 on Murray to win exactly two of Tennis’ big ones next season.
And for the cynical among you, 7/4 says the current Wimbledon champion wins one Slam next year.
But the Scot is heavily odds-on to win one more award before we see out 2016.
Murray is 1/6 favourite for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, in what would be a fitting culmination to an incredible turnaround during the past few months.
It’s a sign of Murray’s year that back in May he could be supported at 12s to win the annual accolade, while the notion he could end the year as the world number one was virtually unthinkable.
