Vertonghen enjoys Tottenham’s City win with sly dig on Twitter

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has seemingly trolled Manchester City’s big-spending ways after Spurs beat Pep Guardiola’s men at the weekend.

Vertonghen starred at the back alongside team-mate Toby Alderweireld as Spurs prevailed 2-0 at White Hart Lane, inflicting Pep’s first loss at City boss.

The victory on Sunday also saw Tottenham’s title odds come tumbling down, with the White Hart Lane outfit now 15/2 from 22/1.

And after the game the Belgian centre-half caught sight of our own @Ladbrokes Twitter post comparing the cost of himself and Alderweireld, with City’s John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi.

It seems Vertonghen agreed with us too.

City forked out just over £37m for Otamendi from Valencia last August, and followed that up by shelling out another £47m for Stones in this summer’s transfer window.

In contrast, Vertonghen cost Spurs just over £10m from Ajax in 2012, with compatriot Alderweireld arriving for a little more than £13m three years later.

The partnership appears to be really bearing fruit now, with Spurs the only remaining unbeaten side in the Premier League.

With a defence that’s conceded only three times in seven games, it’s little wonder why.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld have played alongside each other for every minute of the season so far, and on the basis of the partnership, Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris is in for a quiet campaign.
