When Gareth Southgate leads England out at Wembley to face Malta this Saturday, he’ll become the latest man to have both played for and managed the Three Lions.
In all, Southgate will become the seventh man to have occupied both roles in the national squad.
Here’s how previous player-cum-managers have got on…
Sir Alf Ramsey – (P) 32apps 3g / (M) P113 W69
Such are the great man’s achievements in the dug out, that it’s an often-overlooked fact that Alf Ramsey featured 32 times as an England player.
A key part of the Three Lions post-war emergence, Ramsey appeared in 29 consecutive internationals, dispatching three penalties between 1948 and 1953.
But of course, the former Tottenham player’s greatest days lay ahead of him, when he became boss of the national team in 1963.
Don Revie – (P) 6apps 4g / (M) P29 W14
In a funny twist, Don Revie’s England career as a player also followed where Ramsey had left off, firing in four goals in just six games between 1954 and 1956.
Succeeding Ramsey as manager following a stunning 13 years as Leeds boss, Revie won 14 of his 19 games in charge of the Three Lions.
Sir Bobby Robson – (P) 20apps 4g / (M) P95 W47
One of football’s most loved characters made 20 international appearances towards the end of Walter Winterbottom’s tenure, netting four times between 1957 and 1962.
Injury wrecked his chances of playing at the 1962 World Cup, but two decades later, Robert William Robson was named England manager after guiding Ipswich to continental glory.
An eight-year tenure took the Three Lions on a rollercoaster ride to a World Cup quarter-final in 1986, and a semi-final in 1990.
Terry Venables – (P) 2apps 0g / (M) P23 W11
Terry Venables holds the unique distinction of being the only man ever to play for England at schoolboy, youth, amateur, U23 and the senior team, thanks to his pair of caps in 1964.
Considered for the 1966 World Cup squad, Venables would add ‘England manager’ to his national resumé in 1994, guiding the Three Lions to a memorable semi-final at Euro 96.
Glenn Hoddle – (P) 53apps 8g / (M) P28 W17
Succeeding Venables was another man who also played for and managed England, in Glenn Hoddle.
The Tottenham star shone for England in the mid-80s, and returned a decade later as manager, posting a win ratio of more than 60 per cent.
Kevin Keegan – (P) 63 apps 21g / (M) P18 W7
Newcastle United legend Kevin Keegan is the most recent England boss to have once played for the Three Lions too.
KK made over 60 appearances between 1972 and 1982, and returned 17 years later to guide the national team to Euro 2000.
