Roma ready to offer Depay a temporary break from endless Man United exile
Italian giants Roma are reportedly preparing to offer a loan deal for Manchester United’s out-of-favour winger Memphis Depay.
After an underwhelming first campaign at Old Trafford following his £30m move from PSV, the Dutch forward has featured in just three Premier League fixtures this season – totalling a measly 12 minutes of football.
It’s a sharp fall from grace for a player who crashed in 22 Eredivisie goals just two seasons ago and arrived in Manchester on the crest of a wave of hype and expectation.
Rumours surfaced during the summer that he may be sold on by United, and though he stayed beyond deadline day, it appears the 22-year-old has no future at the club.
With Marcus Rashford usurping him in the winger stakes at the Theatre of Dreams, plus Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial to contend with, it could be time Depay starts to look elsewhere to reignite a career which looked so promising only 18 months ago.
Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport believe Roma could be set to offer a loan deal, with a view to a subsequent permanent move in the summer.
Given United shelled out a sizeable fee for the winger, they could be keen to cash in before next season.
A key to Roma’s interest is the Africa Cup of Nations.
Star man Mohamad Salah – Five goals and five assists in 10 Serie A games this term – will be away for a crucial part of the campaign with Egypt.
A loan deal in January could suit both clubs and indeed the player.
Depay can recapture his magic at Roma, the Italian side don’t miss out on Salah’s absence, and United could either call back the newly-inspired Dutchman or Roma buy themselves a quality attacker.
But it remains to be seen where Depay’s permanent destiny lies, but it’s rapidly looking like Old Trafford isn’t the answer.
