Rating all 12 of Darren Clarke’s European Ryder Cup losers

Rafa Cabrera Bello – 8/10

The only member of Darren Clarke’s team to remain undefeated this week. Formed a successful partnership with Sergio Garcia. Their comeback from four down to halve with Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed was a rare moment of European fight.

Matt Fitzpatrick – 3/10

A tough introduction for the 22-year-old, who only played once over the first two days and was sent out in the bottom match of the singles. He lost both outings.

Sergio Garcia – 7/10

When not weighed down by Martin Kaymer, the Ryder Cup veteran was a valuable commodity to the European team. His ability to cling to a red-hot Phil Mickelson to earn a half-point in the singles showed his class.

Martin Kaymer – 2/10

Despite a comeback win over Matt Kuchar on Sunday, he didn’t contribute to a win on any hole during his three appearances on the first two days, which for a Captain’s Pick is criminal.

Rory McIlroy – 9/10

After carrying the fight to the hosts almost on his own in the first four matches, McIlroy ran out of steam on the back nine against Patrick Reed on Sunday.

Thomas Pieters – 10/10

Won four of the five matches he played and looked like a Ryder Cup veteran by the time he beat J.B. Holmes in the third match on Sunday. He’ll be a fixture in this event for years to come.

Justin Rose – 5/10

Ultimately the Englishman’s putter let him down this week, but his fighting spirit ensured he claimed two points from his five matches and was never beaten with more than two holes left to play.

Henrik Stenson – 7/10

Like Rose, the Swede was inconsistent during the tournament but was still able to claim two points, including taking down American poster boy Spieth in the singles.

Andy Sullivan – 3/10

Having not played since the first morning, asking Sullivan to stand toe-to-toe with the putting excellence of Brandt Snedeker in the singles was tough. He didn’t stand a chance.

Lee Westwood – 1/10

Missed a tiddler of a putt to claw back what could have been a pivotal half-point on Saturday evening and went without a single point in two matches as a Captain’s Pick.

Danny Willett – 1/10

Lost two of his three matches by a five-and-four scoreline and contributed to just two winning holes in three matches.

Chris Wood – 5/10

Unlucky not to have featured more having defeated Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson in partnership with Rose on Saturday morning. Rallied against Dustin Johnson in the singles, but too late.
