Odds stacked against Northern Ireland for trip to face Germany

Published:

The last time Northern Ireland managed to get anything from a game against Germany was during a World Cup qualifier in 1996 that ended 1-1.

With five defeats following that draw, it’s easy to see why Michael O’Neill’s side are a huge price of 22/1 to upset Die Mannschaft on Tuesday night.

The Germans have scored 15 goals in that string of victories, conceding just two, and are heavily fancied at odds of 2/15 to continue their supremacy in Hanover. The draw can be backed at 7/1.

Joachim Low has orchestrated identical 3-0 wins in his country’s first two Group C outings – over Norway and Czech Republic – and should be confident of totting up another sack full of strikes against the Green and White Army.

Four of Germany’s last five wins over Northern Ireland have come by scoring three or more goals and we go 1/2 that the latest tussle contains more than 2.5 strikes. It’s also 5/4 that the encounter sees at least four.

If the hosts are rampant once more, then expect Bayern Munich man Thomas Muller to lead the charge. The forward has scored four of Germany’s six goals in the campaign so far and has six goals in 11 games for club and country this term.

He’s 3/1 to open the scoring at Niedersachsenstadion and is a very appealing 10/3 to bag two or more in the match.

Northern Ireland warmed up for this clash by hosting San Marino, a game in which Kyle Lafferty scored twice in a 4-0 win.

The Norwich man is a massive 40/1 to match the feat against the defending World Cup champions and can be backed at 5/1 to find the net at any time.
