Now’s the time to back Clyde to topple Ladbrokes League 2 favourites
Back in late September, Forfar Athletic were eight points clear and odds-on with the bookies to win Ladbrokes League 2.
Two defeats later they’re still the favourites, but their sudden slump, and good form from Barry Ferguson’s Clyde, means that now is the time to back the Cumbernauld outfit.
Clyde have chalked up 16 points in their last seven league games, conceding a stingy two goals in their last five – but it’s at the other end where they boast arguably the division’s top talent, in the form of ex-St Johnstone forward Sean Higgins.
The 31-year-old has netted five times in his last six league games, including a pair of neat finishes from whipped-in free-kicks against Cowdenbeath, and a crucial winner at Edinburgh City.
And as we saw from the fantastic Nathan Austin at East Fife last season, a player of that quality can propel a side to the title in this division.
Not that Clyde are a one-man team, of course. Veteran forward Peter MacDonald provides an excellent outlet, holding the ball up well and providing neat distribution, while the likes of Matt Flynn offer a threat from midfield.
Defensively, the Bully Wee’s stats speak for themselves, and full-back pairing Scott Linton and Ewan McNeil are building an excellent understanding.
They head into a tricky run now, with games against fellow title challengers Elgin City and Arbroath in their next three. But with Higgins on fire and their defence looking increasingly assured, now could be the time Clyde pull away from the sides around them.
With just four points separating Ferguson’s men from top spot, the 3/1 for Clyde to lift the title looks like excellent value indeed.
In the short term, their focus will be on overcoming Stirling Albion at Broadwood Stadium on Saturday.
