Liverpool have greater need for PSG defender than Chelsea

No shortage of irony can be found in the fact that the one Paris Saint-Germain player that directly benefitted from David Luiz’s return to Chelsea is now a transfer target for the Blues.

According to The Sun, Presnel Kimpembe is being tracked by the Stamford Bridge club, Manchester United and Liverpool after making a solid start to the season in the French capital.

Although Kimpembe started alongside Luiz in the first four games of PSG’s season, that was down to the absence of club captain Thiago Silva.

The French youngster was then able to retain his place when Silva returned to fitness, thanks to Luiz’s Deadline Day departure for west London.

Only Lucas Moura has logged more Ligue 1 minutes than the 21-year-old through the first nine games and with 17 interceptions and 18 clearances in that time, Kimpembe is more than holding his own among PSG’s lavish squad.

Chelsea’s need for a young defender like him is exasperated every day that they are linked with a Serie A-based centre-half, but it should actually be Liverpool that make the biggest play for the French U21 international.

The Reds’ continued defensive shortcomings are continually masked by the attacking verve on display under Jurgen Klopp. But the fact remains that the Anfield outfit have kept just two clean sheets in eight Premier League games this term.

Mamadou Sakho’s days appear numbered after a falling out with the German, seemingly freeing up a spot in Klopp’s centre-half rotation among Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.

At 25-years-old, Matip is the youngest of that trio so the merits of freshening things up with a young pup like Kimpembe are clear.

Following the goalless draw at home to United on Monday, Liverpool remained a 9/2 chance to win the league title this term.
