Lack of Man Utd-Barca business makes striker switch unlikely

Manchester United are willing to offer £135m to sign Luis Suarez from Barcelona.

That’s the report emanating in the Spanish media this weekend and reported by the Daily Express and others on these shores.

As lovely as it would be to have the world’s best strikers on the Red Devils payroll, such a move looks extremely unlikely.

Put aside the fact that Suarez is paid handsomely in Catalonia, is part of the most feared front three in the sport and is enjoying all of the team success he craved when deciding to leave Liverpool.

Instead the main reason the Uruguayan won’t quit the La Liga side for Old Trafford is that Manchester United and the Blaugrana very rarely do business.

In fact, just two players have moved between the English and Spanish giants since the creation of the Premier League.

Jordi Cruyff is the only man signed by United from the Nou Camp, while Gerard Pique went the other way in 2008.

The central defender was originally signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Barca, but that was on a youth contract so isn’t included in our count.

Suarez scored 69 top-flight goals for Liverpool in just 110 games before leaving for Spain, where he has since managed to improve his league record to a spellbinding 63 strikes in 71 appearances.

Since moving to Barcelona, the Uruguayan striker has won two league titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, the Champions League, the Fifa World Club Cup, the Uefa Super Cup and the Supercopa de Espana.

In the same period Manchester United have not finished higher than fourth, have just one FA Cup title to their name and have hired their third manager of the post-Ferguson era.
