Inter Milan may steal Liverpool’s left-back solution

Published:

We don’t want to invoke fear into Liverpool fans, but the Reds can’t use James Milner as left-back forever. The Englishman has done a sterling job for Jurgen Klopp this season, but the Anfield outfit need to find an alternative for the long term.

The answer to that is quite possibly FC Koln’s Jonas Hector. But reports this week claim Inter Milan might just ruin any plans the Merseysiders may have held of snapping up the highly-rated 26-year-old.

Hector has shone for the Die Geißböcke signing making his senior debut in 2012.

The Germany international has barely missed a game across the last four seasons, and has been a major part of the club’s successful return to the Bundesliga since gaining promotion in 2014.

Koln currently sit an impressive fourth in this season’s standings, in large part thanks to a defence which has been breached just three times in six games.

Only Bayern Munich can boast a better defensive record.

But it’s believed Inter Milan are launching a £27m move to take Hector to Italy in January.

Tottenham are also reportedly in the chase, but with Danny Rose and Ben Davies at White Hart Lane, Liverpool seem the more viable alternative should Hector agree on a move to England.

Klopp’s men have been one of the stars of the season so far, but the use of Milner at left-back is a short-term solution, albeit a fine one.

Hector is widely regarded as one of the finest left-backs on the continent, and he is one of the very few who may be available for an acceptable fee whenever January’s window opens.

The Reds have little problem going forward, and Hector’s arrival would offer Klopp extra quality and depth, while also allowing Milner to return to his midfield ways.

But they’ll have to move fast or risk missing out on a man who could be the final piece of the puzzle.
