Churchill being upstaged in Dewhurst among C4 racing’s best bets

Seven races from York and Newmarket feature on this weekend’s Channel 4 racing card, which includes the highly competitive, 36-runner Cesarewitch handicap over 2m2f.
Steering clear of this seemed sensible when highlighting three promising bets from the televised action, with our choices coming in races featuring no more than 10 runners:
It has been slightly strange to this Godolphin horse campaigned over 1m on his last two starts, having looked a convincing winner over 1m2f at Leicester back in July.
Great Order is back over the longer trip at York, having crucially been caught short of some instant acceleration at Newmarket last time, before getting going too late when going down by a neck.
Plenty of improvement still looks on the cards over this distance, with Saeed Bin Suroor mixing up his jockey bookings by giving Kevin Stott a first ride on the three-year-old.
All eyes will be on Aidan O’Brien’s odds-on favourite Churchill in the Dewhurst Stakes, which is considered the most prestigious two-year-old race in Britain each season.
However, Churchill was not the most impressive when surging clear of doubtful stayer Mehmas over 7f last time in a Group 1 at the Curragh and is worth taking on at the prices.
South Seas has done little wrong in winning on all three starts, including the Solario Stakes at Sandown. The runner up in that race – Salouen – has franked the form somewhat too by finishing in the same position in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Chantilly since.
Andrew Balding’s runner is unproven on ground as firm as it is likely to be at Newmarket with good-to-soft the quickest he has encountered, but is well worth a step up into this company over what looks his optimum trip.
Earlier on the same Newmarket card O’Brien saddles another warm favourite in The Anvil, who heads the betting for the Group 3 Autumn Stakes despite still being a maiden after three starts.
His second in the Group 2 Royal Lodge over course and distance last time is among the most noteworthy form on offer, but the fact he has failed to win easier races is a concern.
The same cannot be said of Sir Michael Stoute’s Zainhom, who still looked very green when winning a maiden on his second start last time over 7f.
This step up to 1m is expected to bring improvement.
