Celtic v Gladbach: Hoops keen to compound visitors’ away struggles

Published:

It may have ended a 10-game home winning streak for the hosts at Celtic Park, but the Hoops’ dramatic 3-3 draw with Manchester City proved that they’re a force to be reckoned with on the European stage.

That should worry Champions League opponents Borussia Monchengladbach, who are struggling to assert themselves in the Bundesliga this season, and are notoriously poor travellers.

They’ve managed a solitary draw from their last four away games in all competitions, conceding twelve goals in the process and scoring just twice.

And their record in this competition is similarly grim, taking just one point on the road in last season’s UCL group stage. With the likes of Thorgan Hazard and Fabian Johnson also not travelling for this one, there’s little chance of them suddenly finding form on their travels.

By contrast, Celtic have managed five wins and a draw in their last six home games in this competition, including putting five past Hapoel Be’er Sheva earlier this season.

That hammering of the Israeli heavyweights was just one more triumph in the 21-game unbeaten home run the Bhoys are on right now, a run in which they’ve netted an incredible 72 times (or 3.4 goals per game).

All that means Celtic look generously priced for victory tonight at 19/10, with Gladbach 13/10 and the draw on at 5/2.

However, with the Hoops having tasted victory after being level at half-time on three occasions this season, the best value could be on HT/FT: Draw/Celtic at the sizeable price of 6/1.

Meanwhile, those looking to the player markets are advised to take a punt on Leigh Griffiths, with the Hoops hitman boasting an impressive five goals in his last six outings in this competition.

It’s 7/4 for the former Hibernian man to find the net anytime here, while 5/1 says he opens the scoring – just as he did in the 2-1 home triumph over Astana in August.
