Austria v Wales: Back Dragons to add clean sheet to victory

Published:

Euro 2016 was a decidedly different experience for this pair, with Wales upsetting the odds to reach the semi-finals, while Austria registered a solitary point in a shoddy group stage display. And it’s Chris Coleman’s men who will come out on top again as they meet in Vienna tonight.

It’s only the second clash between these two in the last decade, with the Dragons chalking up a 2-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium in 2013. And they’ve only improved in the three years since.

In fact, Wales have taken 11 points from their last six away games in qualification, including two draws against Belgium and a commanding 3-0 victory in Israel last year.

By contrast, Austria’s recent home form is something of an embarrassment. Three defeats in their last five on their own patch is bad enough as it is, before you consider the only two positive results came against 10-man Albania and a listless 2-1 victory over minnows Malta.

That gulf in class was obviously evident in the Euros, but was visible again in matchday one of World Cup 2018 qualifying. Wales grabbed a scorching 4-0 win against Moldova, while Das Team were outplayed in Georgia, though they somehow scraped all three points.

Wales clearly look the best selection in the match betting at 12/5 to win, with Austria 5/4 and the draw on at 21/10.

However, the best value could be on a 2-0 Wales win at 14/1, with Coleman’s charges having won three of their last five games to nil.

And one man who could well find himself on the scoresheet is Sam Vokes, who’s 12/5 to net for the third time in four Wales games.
