4 of Diamonds effectively dealt blackjack in missing X Factor week one
With Brooks Way kicked off the X Factor, judges’-house rejects, 4 of Diamonds have been given a second chance to win the show.
Actually, this is a third chance in theory, with recent revelations that the four girls – Yasmin Lauryn, Sophia Saffarian, Lauren Rammell and Caroline Alvares – were put together at an X Factor workshop having initially failed to make it beyond the first stage of auditions.
Little Mix are one previous act put together under similar circumstances and they remain the only group to win the show after 12 series. It is 7/1 that 4 of Diamonds win the X Factor.
That they begin in week two is a promising start given the struggles girl groups have previously had in negotiating early live shows.
There have been girl groups in eight of the previous series and four have failed to make it beyond week one – Addictiv Ladies, Bad Lashes, Kandy Rain and Alien Uncovered.
In fact only three have made it to the final five – Little Mix, Hope in series four and 4th Impact last year. Hope needed three sing-off saves to do so too.
As the new act, they can expect to do well in the week-two vote, where they will perform You Keep Me Hangin’ On, which was initially sung by Motown female group The Supremes.
When Amelia Lily returned to the show in series eight she received close to double the number of votes compared to her fellow competitors. Don’t be surprised to see 4 of Diamonds rank prominently in Motown Week.
Few will argue that 4 of Diamonds weren’t the best vocally of the six groups to make the judges’ house stage, but girl groups clearly struggle to make a connection with voters.
Producers will need to develop a back story or sympathy as strong vocals alone are unlikely to do the trick. The good news is that there are no obvious stand-out stars to compete against.
Much will hinge on the treatment given to three-piece dancing boyband 5 After Midnight. Getting viewers to invest in two groups simultaneously is a thankless and almost impossible task.
With Bratavio out, one will get preferential treatment over the other. 5 After Midnight have looked the alpha group so far, but a change of direction has been visible many times in the past and can’t be written off again.
