Tottenham v Sunderland: Dembele’s return to bring Kane goals

Published:

Having played the second half of the Champions League defeat to Monaco, Mousa Dembele should be set to be unleashed from the start in Tottenham’s next Premier League outing at home to Sunderland.

Dembele has missed the opening four top-flight games of the campaign after serving a suspension that carried over from last season and without him poise and guile has been lacking in Spurs’ central midfield.

The Belgian has an uncanny ability to escape the midfield press of opponents, with his dribbling abilities often at the forefront of Spurs being able to launch attacking transitions quickly from deep.

Harry Kane clearly seems to be the player who profits most from Dembele’s skill-set, even if the midfielder is not directly responsible for supplying the final pass to the England striker.

In the 27 league matches that Dembele started for Spurs last term, Kane scored 24 goals. In the 11 that the 29-year-old didn’t, Kane netted only once.

This record hasn’t improved much in the current campaign, with the frontman netting only once across five Tottenham appearances and profiting from just four penalty-box chances in as many league fixtures.

Yet with Dembele back and in line to start, now looks the time to back Kane to get back on the goal bandwagon.

It is 14/5 that Kane opens the scoring at White Hart Lane, 5/6 that he is on target at any point in the 90 minutes and a potentially lucrative 15/4 that he nets more than once against Sunderland.

Meanwhile, 1/3 is the price that Mauricio Pochettino’s team collect the three points, but the better bet may ultimately prove backing Tottenham to be ahead at both half time and full time at 1/1.

Not only have Sunderland failed to score a first-half goal this season, but Spurs are yet to concede after the interval. The Spurs win to nil is available at 10/11.
