Sunderland boss seeking goal-scoring cavalry in January

Following a well worn transfer path, Sunderland manager David Moyes will head to Denmark in the hope of capturing a Paraguayan this January.
So say the Guardian newspaper at least, who link the Black Cats boss to a proposed swoop for FC Copenhagen striker Federico Santander.
It’s not rocket science to see why. The 25-year-old netted 14 league goals and 17 in 36 all-told across his debut campaign for Copenhagen in 2015/16 culminating in the Danish Superligaen crown.
Having returned seven more goals in 18 appearances this term, including a strike in the Champions League proper in the recent 4-0 rout of Club Brugge, such exploits are like honey to a bear for Moyes and Sunderland.
Sitting rock bottom of the Premier League standings with a point from six games, solutions must be sought in the next transfer window if the Mackems are to defy their 4/6 favourites tag for relegation.
Should anything happen to evergreen striker Jermain Defoe, who is responsible for four out of five team goals this term, then a precarious situation quickly becomes a toxic one on Wearside.
Capturing Santander or A.Other centre-forward to help carry the scoring can is essential.
Sunderland were linked with plenty of forwards during the summer transfer window, such as out-of-favour Everton marksman Oumar Niasse, to no avail.
Other than Moyes’ former charge Victor Anichebe, hardly a goal mine at Goodison Park or the Hawthorns more recently, no main targets ever materialised.
The situation has since been compounded by an injury to Fabio Borini.
If Santander could be snared then he need only look to countryman Roque Santa Cruz for inspiration after one of Paraguay’s finest football exports enjoyed a fruitful spell at Blackburn Rovers between 2009 and 2011, scoring 23 times in 57 Premier League appearances.
