Rory McIlroy backed to be Ryder Cup top point scorer

When all is said and done come Sunday night, Rory McIlroy will be the weekend’s top point scorer at the 41st Ryder Cup.

That’s the view of our friends on Twitter, who tipped the Northern Irishman to come good in our poll today.

Europe have gone into the tournament as slight outsiders, with hosts USA odds-on for victory as they bid to end a run of eight defeats in the last 10 Ryder Cups.

McIlroy topped today’s poll with 41 per cent of the vote, ahead of fellow European Justin Rose on 28 per cent.

American hotshot Jordan Spieth came third on 22 per cent, while Dustin Johnson – finally a Major winner now and enjoying arguably the finest year of his career – somewhat surprisingly came home in fourth with only nine per cent of the vote.

Friday’s action has already provided some thrilling moments in front of a roaring crowd at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

And with plenty of scintillating action still to come, we’re staying glued to our TV screens this weekend.
