Real Madrid man set to replace Rooney in Man Utd number 10 role

Published:

He may be captain of one of the biggest clubs in world football, but that doesn’t mean Wayne Rooney’s position at Manchester United is safe, as Real Madrid’s Isco emerges as a new target for former Bernabeu boss Jose Mourinho.

It’s just 5/4 for Madrid’s forgotten man to leave the Spanish giants in January, and while United are currently considered to have an 8/1 chance of signing the 24-year-old at the next available opportunity, that could all change should Rooney’s form fail to improve.

Mourinho has reportedly identified Isco as a perfect player to sit behind Ibrahimovic in United’s attack. And Rooney’s omission from the starting line-up against Leicester City last weekend has forced our traders to slash odds of him leaving Old Trafford before next summer’s transfer window slams shut to just 4/6.

Should the ex-Everton man leave the 13-time Premier League winners, it would surely pave the way for a player such as Isco to arrive at the club.

And given that the Spain international is 5/4 to leave Madrid in January, there’s every chance Rooney could be heading elsewhere midway through the season.

Isco has represented Los Blancos on 153 occasions in all competitions since he arrived back in 2013, scoring 22 goals and assisting 35. In the same time Rooney has featured 127 times, scoring 49 and assisting 38.

But Rooney is just a month short of his 31st birthday and many would argue his best years are behind him, while Isco is only 24, and would be a welcome addition to United’s squad.

Rooney’s United are in action this week against Zorya in the Europa League, and 6/4 says he returns to Mourinho’s starting line-up and scores on Thursday night.

A Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Should Isco make the move from Madrid to Manchester, it could force Rooney to look for a new club as early as January.”
