Odds say Eubank Jnr very unlikely to back up Triple G trash talk

It’s no coincidence that neither of the men directly in Gennady Golovkin’s eye line after temporarily altering Kell Brook’s with bone-crunching force and taking his professional record to 36-0, is Chris Eubank Jnr.

Yet, almost immediately after Brook’s valiant attempt to step up two divisions and defeat the world’s number one-ranked middleweight, Eubank Jnr was busy on social media.

This tweet was received particularly badly by the father of Brook’s promoter and founder of the Matchroom stable Barry Hearn, who labelled it as “shameless”.

Trash talking is not a new phenomenon in boxing, but Eubank Jnr’s claims are stretching the limits of decency and reality it would seem.

We have reacted by pricing up the theoretical bout and it’s not that hard to see why Golovkin is the 1/8 favourite, while the son of former world champion Chris Eubank is rated a distant 5/1 outsider.

Although Eubank Jnr is a natural middleweight and the British champion to boot, the one blot on his copybook so far remains a big one in the shape of fellow Brit Billy Joe Saunders, who is the reigning WBO middleweight champion.

Despite earning somewhat of a slippery reputation when it comes to fight offers, Saunders has also seen fit to call out Golovkin in the wake of his O2 triumph over Brook, saying on his Instagram account that the Kazakh Thunder need only name his date.

In an interview with Sky Sports post the Brook fight, Golovkin said he would very much welcome a chance at Saunders, who after injury, is in line for a mandatory WBO title defence on the undercard of Fury v Klitschko II on October 29th.

Meanwhile, the fight the world would salivate over most is also wanted by Golovkin, and that’s a shot at BoxRec’s best-rated pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, Saul Alvarez.

Having knocked out Amir Khan in tremendous style last time, the Mexican has opted to take on Liam Smith in America, who is the current WBO light-middleweight champion.

With Canelo the 1/10 favourite, it’s difficult to see him being upset in Texas and another decisive showing will only ramp up the clamour for him to jump into the ring with Golovkin.

As for Eubank Jnr, he will next be in action against mandatory British middleweight challenger Tommy Langford in Cardiff on October 22nd, so Triple G remains some way off yet it would seem.
