Liverpool and Leeds deals among biggest blocked on Deadline Day

So another Deadline Day is in the books and, to the delight of the hype mongers at Sky Sports, this one helped contribute to one of the biggest transfer windows on record.

In terms of fees paid, the £1bn mark was “smashed” by Premier League clubs this summer. However, in one of the many quirks in this strange footballing phenomen, the day after the night before always tends to focus on the deals that weren’t done.

There are, of course, any number of reasons why a transfer doesn’t go through. Paperwork may not get filed in time – see the David de Gea/Keylor Navas saga for an example – or personal terms could prove the stumbling block.

But without doubt the most dramatic of all the non-deals is when a move is sensationally BLOCKED by the selling club.

Here is the rundown of the best three from last night’s extravaganza:

Daniel Sturridge to Arsenal

The England striker’s representatives tried to sound out Arsenal over a loan deal in the last 24 hours of the window, according to Goal.com.

However, any potential switch to London for the 27-year-old was quickly iced by his Merseyside owners, who had no intention of letting the former Chelsea man leave.

With Jurgen Klopp favouring a strikerless system this season, it appears Sturridge will have to settle for the Reds bench a while longer.

Yaya Sanogo to Leeds

It appears Arsenal did some rebuffing of their own on Deadline Day, as the Sun suggest Arsene Wenger refused to allow forgotten striker Sanogo leave for Leeds on loan.

The 23-year-old, who scored three goals in eight Championship games in a temporary stint with Charlton last term, is reportedly in his manager’s plans this season and so was unavailable to the Yorkshire side.

Gunners fans must be smacking their lips in excitement over seeing the Auxerre youngster back in action.

Morgan Schneiderlin to Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has only handed Schneiderlin five minutes of top-flight action since arriving at Manchester United.

Despite that, the Portuguese reportedly stopped the Frenchman heading to White Hart Lane because the midfielder is indeed in his future plans.

Five minutes in three games seems like a funny way of showing a player love. But Schneiderlin need only look at Bastian Schweinsteiger – who isn’t in Mourinho’s plans, didn’t find a new club and will be seeing out his career training alone – for comfort.
