ICYMI: Cappie the Cat wins the Ladbrokes SPFL Mascot Race

Published:

If there’s one specific event in the sporting calendar that can rival the likes of the World Cup final, Cheltenham Gold Cup or even Transfer Deadline Day then it’s the Ladbrokes SPFL Mascot Race. And believe us when we say it, this was one of the best.

The Mascot Race is famous for its varied competitors, ranging from pandas to squirrels, roosters to bears and decapitated cats to life sized pastries. Everyone is equal – that’s the beauty.

And what a well behaved starting line it was – with no mascots straying – top marks have to go to the officials on the track for controlling such a mixed bunch of competitors.

Nuts the Squirrel from Kilmarnock could be heard from all corners of the racecourse prior to the event – and some have argued that his ‘all-talk’ approach hindered the performance of several runners, something the SPFL Mascot Race Association (SPFLMRA) would consider investigating should such an organisation exist.

Elsewhere, Hoopy the Huddle Hound and Broxi Bear certainly put their differences to one side for the afternoon as the pair were inseparable – and talks of a reality show following the cuddling couple are intensifying, with several TV stations rumoured to be interested.

But moving onto the race itself. Greenock Morton’s Cappie the Cat was gradually backed into 13/8 favourite before the event got underway – and he certainly didn’t let his fans down on the day.

In fact, nobody could come close to Cappie and following his incredible start, the market leader went on to win by a little over a whisker.

It’s thought the milk was flowing well into the early hours of Saturday morning, and we can’t wait to see Cappie attempt to retain his title next year!
