How Twitter reacted to Canelo Alvarez stopping Liam Smith
Published:Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez had the boxing world calling for a showdown with Gennady ‘Triple G’ Golovkin after a brutal display of power against Liam Smith.
Despite a brave showing from England’s defending light middleweight champion, he was unable to cope with the might of Canelo’s punches.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the bout, which was stopped in the ninth round:
A brutal body shot brought Smith to the canvas

Despite being unbeaten in his 24 fights as a professional, Smith couldn’t match Canelo’s class
Proud of @LiamBeefySmith tonight. Very game but lost to a special fighter in @Canelo He’ll learn & improve massively & bounce back?

While many praised the Brit for his courage, it was clear what the public wanted to see next
Canelo is a very very good fighter, smith was just a step behind all night, tried his best, that’s all you can do, Canelo Vs GGG please ????

The man himself claims GGG has been offered the chance for a bout twice
“I fear no one. I am the best fighter right now. We offered @GGGBoxing twice the money to fight. He didn’t accept” @Canelo #CaneloSmith

But it seems Canelo’s own promotion team are protecting him for now

I agree with Max.. Canelo is GoldenBoy’s stock & they are protecting their investment. I dont believe Canelo is afriad to fight Golovkin

Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo’s promoter, said the GGG fight will happen, just not yet
Oscar says Canelo will fight in December and then May and then GGG next September. https://t.co/S0wPdysyBL

While the man himself maintained the Smith victory was a team performance
This fight was for all of my people. As I said on the ring, “We are a team and we’ll do this together.” Viva Mexico! pic.twitter.com/IV56iprRnT
